Summer Ventures in Science & Math

SVSM gave me the jumpstart that I needed to realize that I wanted a career in the field of biological sciences.

SVSM gave me insight into a world beyond high school. I had an incredible time exploring a subject I would have never been able to broach otherwise.

SVSM was by far one of the most important experiences of my high school career. I made important, long-lasting friendships and it changed the course of my life.

It was a wonderful experience, with great (and challenging) classes, and even better people. I recommend it to everyone.

I made lasting friendships with many bright and talented people who had similar interests and goals in life.

It gave me the opportunity to learn how to live in a college setting, gain a ton of new friends, and grow intellectually for future endeavors with academics.

The month I spend doing Summer Ventures was by no doubt the best of my life. It made me realize how fun learning can be and introduced me to the world of scientific research.

SVSM was a wonderful experience, academically and otherwise. It helped me grow and become prepared for the greater academic challenges at the university level.

My SVSM experience helped shape my outlook towards my home, community, peers, and world for the better.

SVSM literally began my career in science - it was a pivotal experience for me and one that I will be eternally grateful for.

The North Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation in 1984 which created Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics. SVSM was conceived as a cost-free enrichment program for academically motivated high school students potentially interested in a career in science or mathematics. SVSM provides participants resident experiences on university campuses during the summer.

The Summer Ventures program was placed under the administration of NC General Administration with coordinating and supervisory roles delegated to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. Five campuses host the Summer Ventures Program with each site having its own director.
